I graduated from Westtown, a Quaker boarding school in 1956 and then attended Brown University majoring in international relations. I stayed on at Brown for a year to work on an MA in political science but interrupted that work to take a job at the Providence City Planning Commission. In 1961 I enrolled at Wharton and in 1963 received an MBA with a combined major in finance and marketing.

In 1971 I took courses on the Presidency at George Washington University. Also starting in 1971 and for a six-year period I worked on my own psychoanalysis, which I include under education because of its pivotal significance to my understanding of both individual and institutional effectiveness. In 1978/79 I was fortunate to receive a sabbatical award to spend a year at the Center for International Affairs at Harvard (CFIA). At CFIA I studied economic development, international economics and issues in public policy and gave various talks on the purpose and operation of America’s foreign aid program. After finishing my year at CFIA, I spent an intensive month in a new program for executives in national security offered by the Harvard business school.

In 1985 I enrolled for a PhD program at the Fielding Institute in California and spent 2 ½ years studying organizational development and human resource management. Although I did not complete a dissertation, I found the courses in psychology, organizational change, leadership and strategic planning to be immensely valuable.

In 1999 I enrolled for an MA in literature at Middlebury’s Breadloaf School of English and in 2005 I received a degree. Of all my adventures in learning, my time at the Breadloaf Schools was the most important in helping me understand the relationship between the aspirations embedded in our stories and the limitations imposed by us and our institutions.
